Samuel Archibald Anthony Hinds, born on December 27, 1943, is a well-known politician from Guyana. He served as the Prime Minister of Guyana for a long time, from 1992 to 2015. He was also briefly the President of Guyana in 1997. In 2011, he received Guyana's highest award, the Order of Excellence.

Early Life and Career

Education and Engineering

Sam Hinds is a trained chemical engineer. He studied at the University of New Brunswick. Before he became a politician, he worked for a company that mined bauxite. Bauxite is a rock used to make aluminum. He rose to a high position in the company.

Political Journey

Becoming Prime Minister

Sam Hinds first became Prime Minister in 1992. This happened after the October 1992 election. The People's Progressive Party (PPP) won the election. They invited Hinds and others to work with them. He served under President Cheddi Jagan.

Brief Time as President

In March 1997, President Cheddi Jagan passed away. Sam Hinds then became the President of Guyana. He appointed Janet Jagan, Cheddi Jagan's wife, as the new Prime Minister.

Returning to Prime Minister Role

For the December 1997 general elections, Janet Jagan ran for President. Sam Hinds was chosen as the candidate for Prime Minister. After the election, Janet Jagan became President. She then re-appointed Sam Hinds as Prime Minister.

Later Terms as Prime Minister

In August 1999, President Janet Jagan decided to step down. She temporarily replaced Hinds with Bharrat Jagdeo. When she resigned, Jagdeo became President. He then re-appointed Sam Hinds as Prime Minister.

After the government was re-elected in August 2006, Hinds was sworn in as Prime Minister again. This happened in early September 2006.

He was chosen again as the Prime Ministerial candidate for the PPP in October 2011. This was for the 2011 elections. After Donald Ramotar was elected President, Hinds became Prime Minister again on December 5, 2011.

End of Prime Ministership

In May 2015, the opposition party won the general election. Sam Hinds was succeeded as Prime Minister by Moses Nagamootoo. This change happened on May 20, 2015.

Current Role

Ambassador to the United States

Since July 2021, Sam Hinds has been serving as the Guyanese Ambassador to the United States. He officially started this role on July 7, 2021.

Scientific Honor

Sam Hinds has even had a species of lizard named after him! It is called Kaieteurosaurus hindsi.
