Samuel Archibald Anthony Hinds (born December 27, 1943) is a famous politician from Guyana. He served as the Prime Minister of Guyana for many years, almost without a break, from 1992 to 2015. He also briefly held the top job as President of Guyana in 1997.
In 2011, Sam Hinds received Guyana's highest national honor. It is called the Order of Excellence (O.E.).
Early Life and Career
Sam Hinds was born in Alexander Village, which was then part of British Guiana. Today, this area is known as Guyana. He studied to become a chemical engineer. He graduated from the University of New Brunswick.
Before entering politics, Hinds worked for a company that mined bauxite. Bauxite is a rock used to make aluminum. This company was called Alcan. Later, the company was taken over by the government in 1971. Hinds rose through the ranks there. He became the Vice President for Product Quality and Research and Development.
Political Journey
Sam Hinds first became Prime Minister in 1992. This happened after the October 1992 election. The People's Progressive Party (PPP) won this election. They invited Hinds and other non-party members to work with them.
When President Cheddi Jagan passed away in March 1997, Hinds stepped up. He became the President of Guyana for a short time. During his presidency, he chose Janet Jagan, Cheddi Jagan's wife, to be the new Prime Minister.
For the general elections in December 1997, the PPP/C party made a plan. They nominated Janet Jagan as their candidate for President. Sam Hinds was chosen as their candidate for Prime Minister. After the election, Janet Jagan became President. She then re-appointed Sam Hinds as Prime Minister.
In August 1999, President Janet Jagan decided to step down. She temporarily replaced Hinds with Bharrat Jagdeo. When she resigned, Jagdeo became President. He then re-appointed Hinds as Prime Minister once again.
After the government won the election on August 28, 2006, Hinds was sworn in. He became Prime Minister again in early September.
In October 2011, he was again chosen as the Prime Ministerial candidate for the PPP party. There were some talks that he might not run. But after Donald Ramotar was elected President, Hinds was sworn in as Prime Minister again. This happened on December 5, 2011.
Later Years
In May 2015, the opposition party won the general election. Sam Hinds was then succeeded by Moses Nagamootoo as Prime Minister. This change happened on May 20, 2015.
Since July 2021, Sam Hinds has been serving as the Guyanese Ambassador to the United States. He officially presented his credentials on July 7, 2021.
