Samir Farid (Arabic: سمير فريد) (December 1, 1943 – April 4, 2017) was an Egyptian writer and a famous film critic. He was also a journalist and a film historian. He lived in Cairo, Egypt.

Samir Farid wrote or helped translate over 60 books. These books were about Egyptian, Arab, and world cinema. He started writing them in 1966. From 2001 to 2016, he worked as a special advisor for cinema at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. This is a very famous library in Egypt.

He was often asked to be a judge at international film festivals. He started doing this in 1972. Some of the festivals he judged include the Oberhausen Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival. In 2014, he was even the head of the Cairo International Film Festival.

Samir Farid's Life and Work

Samir Farid was born in Cairo, Egypt, in 1943. He loved movies and studied film criticism. In 1965, he graduated from a special art school in Cairo. His final project was about a play called Waiting for Godot.

After graduating, he started writing about movies. He worked as a film critic for Al-Gomhoreya newspaper in Cairo. This was a daily newspaper. From 1967 onwards, he traveled a lot. He was invited to more than 200 film festivals and events. These events were in Africa, Asia, the USA, and Europe.

Samir Farid was also involved with many film magazines. He was part of the team for Al-Cinema and Al-Talliaa in Egypt. He also worked with magazines in Algeria and Cyprus.

He helped create important film events and groups. He was a co-founder of national festivals for short films and feature films. He also helped start groups for film critics. These included the Arab Film Critics Union. He was a member of FIPRESCI, which is a big international group of film critics.

In 1977, he became the main editor of an Egyptian film magazine. It was called El-Cinema Wa El-Finoun. He also helped with a big project. This project was about writing the general history of cinema. From 1981 to 1985, he worked for Variety. This is a very famous magazine about entertainment. He advised the Minister of Culture in Egypt in 1989. Later, in 2001, he became the cinema supervisor at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
