History of Sammons Point
Sammons Point has an interesting history of becoming a village. It was formed to help protect the community from a large landfill expansion.
First Attempt to Become a Village
In March 2006, the people of Sammons Point voted to become an official village. This was done to prevent a company called Waste Management from expanding its landfill nearby. Most people, 82 voters (66.7%), voted yes to becoming a village. Only 41 people (33.3%) voted no.
Waste Management owned land inside the new village. They wanted their land to be outside the village's control. They preferred it to be under the Kankakee County Board's rules instead. So, they went to court to challenge the election results. They said the people who organized the vote did not follow all the rules.
A local court first agreed with Sammons Point. But Waste Management appealed the decision to a higher court. In June 2007, the higher court in Ottawa sided with Waste Management. Sammons Point tried to get another hearing, but it was denied on August 8, 2007. Because of this, Sammons Point officially stopped being a village on September 13, 2007.
Becoming a Village Again
Even though Sammons Point was no longer a village, the community did not give up. They quickly started working to become a village again. A new election was held on February 5, 2008. This time, 87 people (57.2%) voted to re-establish the village. Only 65 people (42.8%) voted against it. About 76% of all eligible voters participated in this important election.
Years later, in November 2016, there was another vote in Sammons Point. This vote was about whether to dissolve the village completely. However, the idea was strongly rejected. Only 30 people voted to dissolve it, while 127 people voted to keep it as a village.
