Sampson Lloyd II (born May 15, 1699 – died 1779) was an important English businessman. He made and sold iron products. He also became a banker and helped start Lloyds Bank, which is a very famous bank today. Sampson was part of the well-known Lloyd family of Birmingham.
Sampson's Business Life
Sampson Lloyd was the third son in his family. His father, also named Sampson Lloyd, was a Quaker. Quakers are a type of Christian group. His family moved from a farm in Herefordshire to Birmingham in 1698.

After his father passed away in 1725, Sampson and his older brother, Charles, bought a place called the Town Mill. They used it to trade iron. Sampson also bought a forge, which is a place where metal is heated and shaped, in Burton upon Trent.
When his brother Charles died in 1741, Sampson became quite rich. In 1742, he bought a large piece of land with a farm on it. This land was in an area of Birmingham called Bordesley. He kept the old farmhouse and built a new, fancy house nearby. He called his new home "Farm". This house is still standing today and is a special historic building.
Sampson still lived part-time in his old house in Birmingham, close to his iron business. In 1765, when he was 66 years old, he decided to start a new business. He teamed up with his son, who was also named Sampson, and a famous button maker from Birmingham named John Taylor. John Taylor's son also joined them.
Together, they created Birmingham's very first bank. It was called Taylor's and Lloyds. This bank was the beginning of what we now know as Lloyds Bank. Today, Lloyds Bank is a huge part of the Lloyds Banking Group.
