Samu Aleksi Haber (born April 2, 1976) is a famous Finnish singer, songwriter, and TV judge. He was the lead singer of the pop-rock band Sunrise Avenue. In 2022, the band took a break, and Samu started his own solo music career.
Early Life and Beginnings
Samu Haber was born in Helsinki, Finland. His father's family comes from Germany, but Samu's family has always lived in Finland. He has a sister named Sanna and a brother named Santtu.
Samu loved ice hockey when he was younger. He played as a defense-man until he was 14 years old. He even went to tournaments in Canada and the United States. His favorite team is Helsingfors IFK.
Music Career
Samu Haber started a band called Sunrise in 1992 with his friend Jan Hohenthal. Jan left the band in 2002. That same year, Samu changed the band's name to Sunrise Avenue.
Between 2002 and 2005, Samu worked very hard. He visited 102 different record companies and agents. He wanted to find someone to help Sunrise Avenue release their music. A friend named Mikko Virtala even sold his house to help pay for the band's first album.
Sunrise Avenue released five studio albums. Their first three albums sold more than 2 million copies around the world. They also sold 2 million singles. Samu Haber wrote most of the band's songs. He wrote them either by himself or with a producer. One of their biggest hits, "Hollywood Hills," was written by Samu alone.
Samu also helps new Finnish bands and artists. He works as a co-manager with CoMusic Management. He used to own a music studio called Sonic Kitchen from 2007 to 2010.
TV Appearances
Samu Haber has been a coach on the German TV show The Voice of Germany. He appeared on the show in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2024. In 2020, he coached with another singer, Rea Garvey. Samu's team won the show in 2017, 2020, and 2024. This means he was the winning coach for his last three seasons!
In 2023, Samu hosted Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu. This is Finland's national show to choose their song for the Eurovision Song Contest 2023.
Solo Music
Samu Haber started his solo career after Sunrise Avenue took a break. His first solo song was "Enkelten kaupunki" (which means "City of Angels"). He released it in 2020. He has also released other solo songs like "Täältä tullaan" (2021), "Sä" (2022), and "Sata vuotta sitten" (2022). His first solo album, Pelastetaan maailma, came out in 2022.
As a solo artist, Samu has been on the Finnish TV show Vain elämää. He appeared in season 6 (2017) and season 10 (2019). On this show, artists perform each other's songs. Samu performed some songs with their original words. For others, he wrote new words and made them his own. He also released these new versions as singles.
Hobbies and Life
Besides music and ice hockey, Samu Haber enjoys other hobbies. He likes kettle bell training and jogging to stay fit. He also served in the Finnish Navy and holds the rank of Sergeant.
