Samuel Bolton (born in 1606 – died October 15, 1654) was an English religious leader and a very smart person (a scholar). He was a member of an important group called the Westminster Assembly. He also served as the head of Christ's College, Cambridge, which is a part of Cambridge University.

Samuel Bolton's Life Story

Samuel Bolton was born in London in 1606. His father was William Bolton, who came from Lancashire. Samuel went to Christ's College, Cambridge for his education.

In 1643, Samuel Bolton was chosen to join the Westminster Assembly. This was a special group of religious leaders and scholars. They met to discuss and organize the Church of England during a time of big changes.

Samuel Bolton worked as a minister in several churches in London. These included St. Martin's, Ludgate Street, St. Saviour's, Southwark, and St. Andrew's, Holborn.

In 1646, he became the Master (or head) of Christ's College, Cambridge. He also served as the Vice-Chancellor of Cambridge University in 1651. This was a very important role, like being the main leader of the whole university.

Samuel Bolton passed away on October 15, 1654, after being sick for a while. A famous preacher named Edmund Calamy gave a speech at his funeral.

One of Bolton's important writings was called The Sinfulness of Sin. He first shared this as a speech to the House of Commons of England. This happened on March 25, 1646, during a special day of prayer.

Samuel Bolton's Family

Some people have mistakenly thought that Samuel Bolton was either the son or brother of another famous religious leader, Robert Bolton (1572–1631). However, this is not correct. Robert Bolton did have a son named Samuel who was also a clergyman, but that Samuel died in 1668, which was later than our Samuel Bolton.
