The San Augustin Mountains are a small group of mountains located at the southern end of the San Andres Mountains. They are found east of Las Cruces, New Mexico. These mountains are part of the larger Chihuahuan Desert region in New Mexico.

What are the San Augustin Mountains Like?
The San Augustin Mountains are about 8 miles (13 km) long. They stretch slightly towards the northeast. To the south, you'll find San Augustin Pass. This is where U.S. Route 70 travels from Las Cruces and Organ. It then turns northeast through White Sands on its way to Alamogordo.
To the north of the mountains is Bear Canyon. This canyon runs from east to west. Further north is the San Andres National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge covers about 30 miles (48 km) of the San Andres Mountains.
Where are the San Augustin Mountains Located?
The town of Organ is located at the southwest base of these mountains. The community of White Sands, NM is to the southeast. The mountains themselves are southwest of the Tularosa Valley.
What are the Main Peaks in the San Augustin Mountains?
The highest point in the San Augustin Mountains is Bear Peak. It stands at 7,087 feet (2,160 meters) tall and is located in the northern part of the range. The southern end of the mountains has San Augustin Peak, which is 7,030 feet (2,143 meters) high.
Other important peaks include:
- Black Mountain, at 7,008 feet (2,136 meters), found in the northeast.
- Quartzite Mountain, an outlier peak in the northwest, at 6,763 feet (2,061 meters).
- Mineral Hill, another outlier mountain to the southeast, at 6,154 feet (1,876 meters).
Bear Peak, the highest point, is located at 32°30′44″N 106°32′19″W / 32.512311°N 106.538608°W.
