San Carlos del Zulia is an important city in Venezuela. It is the main city of Colón Municipality in Zulia State. The city was founded a long time ago, on March 14, 1778. Captain Nicolás José Antúnez Pacheco y de la Cruz y Velasco, an alderman from Maracaibo, helped start the city. He worked with Lieutenant Ramón Hernández de la Calle. They helped bring peace to the Motilón people living in the area.

How San Carlos del Zulia Began
After the founding ceremonies, the land for the city was measured and set up. This happened on March 27, 1778. The first 13 plots of land were marked out and given to the first people who settled there.
Captain Antúnez Pacheco also chose the first mayor, Rafael Echeverria. He also picked the first members of the city council, called a Cabildo. The plans for the city's layout were approved by the royal courts in Spain the year before. Building the city started after the new council was chosen. The Capuchin Order was put in charge of the city's religious life.
Life in San Carlos del Zulia Today
San Carlos del Zulia grew to become a key place for livestock and food. It supplied the northern Andean region and Apure State. Its growth brought together nearby towns like Santa Bárbara del Zulia. They formed one large city area.
Today, San Carlos is a medium-sized city. It has more than 55,000 people living there. The city has different industries. These include sawmills and meat packing plants. San Carlos has an airport and a thermal power station. It also has many schools and hospitals.
Nature and Fun in San Carlos
The area around San Carlos del Zulia has beautiful natural spots. You can find the Catatumbo and Escalante rivers here. There are also bogs like San Miguel de Agua Clara and Valderrama. Don't forget the Birimbay lagoon!
The city also celebrates special events. The festival of Our Lady of Carmen happens every year on July 16. The festivals of Santa Bárbara and San Carlos are celebrated on November 4.
