San Carlos del Zulia is an important city in Venezuela. It is the main city of Colón Municipality in Zulia State. The city was founded a long time ago, on March 14, 1778. Captain Nicolás José Antúnez Pacheco y de la Cruz y Velasco, an alderman from Maracaibo, helped start the city. He worked with Lieutenant Ramón Hernández de la Calle. They helped bring peace to the Motilón people living in the area.

How San Carlos del Zulia Began

After the founding ceremonies, the land for the city was measured and set up. This happened on March 27, 1778. The first 13 plots of land were marked out and given to the first people who settled there.

Captain Antúnez Pacheco also chose the first mayor, Rafael Echeverria. He also picked the first members of the city council, called a Cabildo. The plans for the city's layout were approved by the royal courts in Spain the year before. Building the city started after the new council was chosen. The Capuchin Order was put in charge of the city's religious life.
