A Look at San Ildefonso's Past
Puerto Rico became a part of the United States after the Spanish–American War. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory. This means it is a U.S. area, but not a state.
In 1899, the United States government counted everyone in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census showed that 1,252 people lived in San Ildefonso barrio at that time.
