San José de Pare is a town and a municipality in Colombia. It is located in the Ricaurte Province, which is part of the Boyacá Department. The town center sits high up in the Andes mountains, about 1,545 meters (5,069 feet) above sea level. The land in the municipality ranges from 1,200 to 2,400 meters (3,900 to 7,900 feet) high.
The Suárez River forms the border between San José de Pare and the Santander Department. Other towns nearby include Chitaraque, Togüí, Moniquirá, and Santana. San José de Pare is also on the main highway that connects Bogotá, the capital of Colombia, to Bucaramanga. It is about 217 kilometers (135 miles) from Bogotá.
What's in a Name?
The name San José de Pare comes from the Pare indigenous people. These native groups lived in the area long before the Spanish arrived.
A Look Back in Time
San José de Pare was officially started on November 3, 1780. It was founded by a person named Pedro Antonio Flórez. At that time, it was part of the old Vélez Province.
A famous leader, Simón Bolívar, even passed through the town on September 29, 1819. Later, in 1857, the Boyacá Department was created. San José de Pare then became part of Boyacá. The rest of the old province became part of the Santander Department.
