Togüí is a town and municipality in Boyacá Department, Colombia. It is part of the Ricaurte Province. This town is located in the Eastern Ranges of the Colombian Andes mountains. It sits at an altitude of about 1,650 meters (5,413 feet) above sea level. Togüí shares its borders with the towns of San José de Pare, Arcabuco, Moniquirá, Chitaraque, and Gámbita.

What Does the Name Togüí Mean?
The name Togüí comes from the Chibcha language. This language was spoken by the Muisca people, who lived in this area long ago. In Chibcha, Togüí can mean "river of the wife" or "house of the dog."

Early Days Before Spanish Arrival
Before the Spanish arrived in Colombia, the area where Togüí is today was part of a larger territory. This land was governed by the zaque of Hunza. Hunza is now known as Tunja, which is the capital city of Boyacá Department. Tunja is about 60 kilometers (37 miles) away from Togüí.
Founding of Modern Togüí
The modern town of Togüí was officially founded on September 23, 1821. It was established by Francisco de Paula Santander. He was a very important leader in Colombia's history.
