San Juan, Intibucá is a small town in the western mountains of Honduras. It is located in the Intibucá region. The town was started by the Spanish way back in 1747.

San Juan is a central spot on the "Lenca Trail." This trail connects different towns like Santa Rosa de Copan and Marcala. Many Lenca groups, who are native people of the area, still live in the villages around San Juan.

Life in San Juan: Coffee and Culture

In the middle of San Juan, you can find an old Catholic Church. It was built by the Spanish a long time ago. Right next to it stands a huge ceibo tree.

Most people in San Juan make their living from coffee. There are many coffee farms all around the area. Some farms are part of special groups called cooperatives. For example, FUNDECASA grows coffee that is approved by Rainforest Alliance. This means it's grown in a way that helps nature. Another group, COARENE, produces Fairtrade and organic coffee. Fairtrade coffee helps farmers get a fair price for their crops. Organic coffee is grown without harmful chemicals.

San Juan is a great place for Ecotourism. This means visiting natural areas in a way that protects them. There's a warm thermal spring just outside of town. It has been set up for visitors to enjoy.

The Opalaca Biological Reserve is also nearby. This is a special area that protects plants and animals. Many small streams flow through the valley, adding to its natural beauty.

A group of local leaders has created a special tourism cooperative. It's the first of its kind in Honduras! They offer trips for people who want to see "the Real Honduras." This area is very rural, with amazing natural sights. You can find waterfalls, cloud forests, and deep canyons.

The cooperative includes many local people. There are guides, small restaurants (called comedores), and guest house owners. Horse owners also help with tours. Visitors can take guided tours on horseback. Local people also teach visitors how to roast coffee. You can even learn about making local crafts or how sugar cane is produced.
