San Lorenzo barrio-pueblo is a special part of San Lorenzo, a town in Puerto Rico. It's like the main downtown area. This barrio (which is a type of neighborhood or district) is where the local government buildings are located. In 2010, about 2,045 people lived here.
Just like in Spain, this main barrio is called a pueblo. It has a central town square, the city hall, and a Catholic church. Every year, special festivals called Fiestas patronales (patron saint festivals) are held in this central square.

The Central Plaza and Its Church
The central plaza, or town square, is a lively spot. People gather there for fun events and to socialize. It's a place where friends and families can meet from morning until night.
Rules for Town Squares
In the early 1800s, Spanish laws called the Laws of the Indies guided life in Puerto Rico. These laws said that town squares were for "parties" (celebrations and festivals). They also stated that the square should be big enough for all the people living nearby. The laws even mentioned that nearby streets should have comfortable walkways. These walkways would protect people from the sun and rain.
The Church in the Plaza
Right across from the central plaza in San Lorenzo barrio-pueblo is a Roman Catholic church. Its name in Spanish is Parroquia Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes.
History of San Lorenzo Pueblo
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it's part of the U.S. but doesn't have all the same rights as a state.
In 1899, the United States government counted the population of Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 2,084 people lived in San Lorenzo Pueblo at that time.
