San Marcos is a town and a municipality in Nicaragua. It is part of the Carazo Department. The town is about 45 kilometers (28 miles) south of Managua, the capital city. In 2022, about 33,303 people lived in the municipality.
The climate in San Marcos is great for growing things. Farmers here produce coffee. They also grow many kinds of tropical flowers and fruits.

Religion in San Marcos
Most people in San Marcos are Catholic. This is because of the Spanish people who came to Nicaragua a long time ago. They brought their Catholic traditions with them.
A very important event each year is the celebration for their patron saint, San Marcos. Many people gather for this special day. The main Catholic church in San Marcos is in the town square. Its design shows the strong Spanish influence.

Keiser University Campus
San Marcos is known as a "University City." This is because it is home to the Latin American Campus of Keiser University. Keiser University's main campus is in Florida, USA. This campus in San Marcos is special. It is one of the only universities in the region that gives degrees recognized in the U.S.
Many students from Central America and the United States come here to study. Over 1,200 students have graduated from this campus. They have gone on to work and study all over the world.
Campus History and Facilities
The university campus building has a rich history. It used to be a famous school called Normal de Señoritas Salvadora de Somoza. This school trained young girls to become elementary school teachers. Students from all over Nicaragua and Central America attended it.
The campus is very large, covering over 740,000 square feet. It has green areas and sports fields. There are 23 classrooms, a library, and an auditorium. Students can use modern computer and science labs. The campus also has dorms, dining areas, a fitness center, and a chapel.
Famous People from San Marcos
Clodomiro Picado Twight
Clodomiro Picado Twight was born in San Marcos in 1887. He was a scientist who worked at the Pasteur Institute. He studied molds, which are a type of fungus. His work was very important. It helped scientists later discover penicillin. Penicillin is a medicine that fights infections.
Anastasio Somoza García
Anastasio Somoza García was a leader of Nicaragua. He was born in San Marcos in 1896. He led the country from 1937 until 1956. He was officially the President of Nicaragua for some of that time. For other periods, he led as a military strongman. His family, known as the Somoza family, ruled Nicaragua for 42 years.
