San Miguel Guancapla, also known as San Miguelito, is a municipality (a type of local government area) in the country of Honduras. It is located in the Intibucá region of Honduras.

A Look Back in Time

How San Miguel Guancapla Was Founded

San Miguel Guancapla has a long and interesting history! Records from 1791 show a town called Guancapla in the Intibucá area. Many people believe that Guancapla was first established way back in 1589.

Becoming a Municipality

Later, in 1870, the town was officially declared a municipality. This means it became its own local government area. When the Intibucá department was created in 1883, Guancapla was one of the municipalities that formed the District of La Esperanza. At that time, it was known as San Miguel Guancapla.

The Name Change

For a while, the area was commonly called San Miguelito. However, in 1984, the government of Honduras made an official decision. On October 2, 1984, a special law (Decree 166-84) officially named the municipality "San Miguel Guancapla" again.

What Does Guancapla Mean?

The name Guancapla means "En los Guacales." This refers to a special tree that grows round fruits. These fruits have a hard, woody shell and were often used as containers by people long ago.

Location and Neighbors

San Miguel Guancapla is located in a flat area. It shares its borders with several other municipalities. To the north, it borders San Juan and Yamaranguila. To the south, it borders Dolores. On its eastern side, it borders Yamaranguila again, and to the west, it borders Erandique.

Population and People

In 2013, a count of the people living in San Miguel Guancapla municipality showed a total of 7,368 residents. The people living here come from different backgrounds.

Different Backgrounds

Most of the people, about 73.54%, are Indigenous, with 73.22% being from the Lenca group. About 16.72% are Mestizo (people of mixed European and Indigenous heritage). Around 5.02% are White, and 4.06% are Black or Afro-Honduran. A small number, 0.66%, are from other groups.
