The Church of St. Michael of Lillo (also known as San Miguel de Lillo in Spanish) is a very old Roman Catholic church. It stands on Naranco mountain, close to the Church of Santa María del Naranco in Asturias, Spain. This church was finished in the year 842. It was officially opened in 848 by King Ramiro I of Asturias and his wife, Paterna.

The church was first dedicated to St. Mary. But in the 12th century, its dedication changed to Saint Michael. Since 1985, it has been recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This means it's a very important place for everyone to protect.

History and Design of St. Michael of Lillo

San Miguel de Lillo plan
Ground plan of the church

The Church of St. Michael of Lillo originally had a special design called a basilica ground plan. This means it had a long main hall and two side aisles. The roof was shaped like a barrel vault, which is a rounded ceiling.

However, part of the church collapsed sometime in the 12th or 13th century. Today, only the western half of the original building remains. Even so, you can still see amazing parts from its early days. For example, the entrance has fantastic door frames called jambs. There is also an amazing stone screen, or lattice, on a window on the southern wall. This screen was carved from a single piece of stone, which is very impressive!
