San Rosendo (pronounced san ro-SEN-doh) is a city and commune in Chile. It is located in the Bío Bío Province, which is part of the Bío Bío Region.

This city sits on the gentle slopes of a hill. From here, you can see where two important rivers meet: the Bío Bío and the Laja. The Bío Bío River is to the west of the city, and the Laja River is to the south. Right across the Laja River is another city called Laja. These two cities are growing closer together, almost forming one big town.

The Story of San Rosendo

San Rosendo started as a fort in 1593. A Spanish governor named Martín García Óñez de Loyola built it.

However, the Mapuche people, who lived in the area, attacked and burned the fort in 1655. The fort was rebuilt, but it was destroyed again during another Mapuche uprising in 1723.

Later, in the late 1800s, a new settlement grew in the same spot. This time, it grew around a railroad station.

People and Area

According to a 2002 count by Chile's National Statistics Institute, San Rosendo covers an area of about 92.4 square kilometers (about 35.7 square miles).

At that time, 3,918 people lived there. This included 1,930 men and 1,988 women. Most of the people, about 3,249 (82.9%), lived in the city's urban areas. The rest, 669 people (17.1%), lived in the countryside or rural areas. Between 1992 and 2002, the number of people living in San Rosendo went down by 10.4%.

How San Rosendo is Governed

San Rosendo is a commune, which is a local government area in Chile. It is managed by a municipal council. The council is led by an alcalde, who is like a mayor. The alcalde is chosen by the people in an election every four years.

From 2008 to 2012, the alcalde of San Rosendo was Duverlis Valenzuela Martínez. He was a member of the RN political party.

San Rosendo is part of a larger area for elections. For the Chamber of Deputies, which is like one part of the country's parliament, San Rosendo is in the 47th electoral district. This district also includes other cities like Los Ángeles and Laja. The people representing this district were Juan Lobos and José Pérez.
