The station was located on the San Simon River. It was a place where travelers could get water and change horses.
In September 1880, the Southern Pacific railway built its tracks to San Simon from the west. This brought train service to the area. By March 1881, the railway connected with eastern tracks in Deming, New Mexico. This connection created the second railway route that went all the way across the United States. San Simon was part of Pima County until February 1881. That's when Cochise County was created from the eastern part of Pima County.
