San Simon's History

San Simon was once an important stop called the San Simon Station for the Butterfield Overland Mail. This was a famous stagecoach route that carried mail and passengers across the country. The station was located on the San Simon River. It was a place where travelers could get water and change horses.

In September 1880, the Southern Pacific railway built its tracks to San Simon from the west. This brought train service to the area. By March 1881, the railway connected with eastern tracks in Deming, New Mexico. This connection created the second railway route that went all the way across the United States. San Simon was part of Pima County until February 1881. That's when Cochise County was created from the eastern part of Pima County.

San Simon School

The San Simon School is the main school in San Simon, Arizona. It teaches students from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade. It is the only school in the San Simon Unified School District.

The high school part of San Simon School had about 40 students. This makes it one of the smallest high schools in the Arizona Interscholastic Association. Only Bowie High School, which is nearby, is smaller. In 2011, the Arizona Department of Education named San Simon School the No. 1 school in Arizona. The school also received an "A" rating in 2012.
