Sándwiches de miga, sometimes called rafaelitos, are very popular sandwiches. You can find them in Argentina and Uruguay. People often enjoy them at parties or as a quick meal.

Most Argentines buy these sandwiches from a local bakery. They don't usually make them from scratch at home. You can eat them as they are, or have them toasted.

The toasted versions are common bar food in both countries. In Argentina, they are known as tostados or carlitos. In Uruguay, people call them sándwiches calientes.

About Sándwiches de Miga

Sándwiches de miga look a lot like the Italian tramezzino sandwich. They also resemble the English cucumber sandwich served at afternoon tea. The Academia Argentina de Gastronomía thinks these sandwiches might have come to Argentina with immigrants from Northern Italy.

However, the Buenos Aires newspaper Clarín has a different idea. They suggest the sandwich was invented by local bakers. This happened at a place called Confitería Ideal. The bakers made a special sandwich with English-style bread. This was to please British engineers who missed food from home. These engineers often visited the bakery in the early 1900s.

What's Inside Sándwiches de Miga?

Sandwich de Miga
Sándwiches de miga are often served at parties.

These sandwiches are made with very thin slices of bread. This bread has no crust, and that soft part is called miga. They can have one, two, or even more layers of filling.

The fillings are usually thinly sliced cold meats, especially ham. Other common fillings include hard-boiled eggs, cheese, and tomatoes. You might also find bell peppers, tuna, or lettuce. Sometimes, other vegetables like asparagus are added too.

Butter or mayonnaise is also a very important ingredient. It helps keep the sandwich moist and adds flavor.
