The Sandy Historic District is a special area in Sandy, Utah. It is known for its many old buildings. This district covers most of the city's original area. This was before Sandy grew into a large suburban city.

The district is located east of State Street. It is west of 700 East. The area is north of 9000 South and south of Pioneer Avenue. Many historic places in Salt Lake County are found here.

This district includes 51 properties already listed on the National Register. It also has 266 other important buildings. These buildings help tell the story of Sandy's past. The famous Jensen-Clark House is also part of this district.

Sandy's Story: From Farms to City

Sandy started as a farming community. People grew crops and raised animals. Later, mining became very important. Smelting operations, which process metal, were set up here.

However, these large smelting plants later moved. They went north to places like Murray and Midvale. This meant Sandy did not grow as fast for a while. It stayed much the same until the 1970s.

When new homes started to be built, developers were not very interested in the old areas. Because of this, the Sandy Historic District has kept its old look. Many original houses are still there. Some have been updated, but the area still feels historic.

A smelter used to be just south of the historic district. Today, only a monument marks its spot. There is also a large cemetery nearby. A museum about Sandy's history is on Main Street. It is near the railroad tracks. These tracks are now used by the TRAX train.

Getting Around Sandy's Historic Streets

The streets in the historic district are different from other parts of the county. They have much smaller blocks. This is different from the grid pattern used in Salt Lake City. Sandy also has its own Main Street. It runs from east to west. This is unlike the main streets in other parts of the county.

Sandy's Main Street is at 8720 South. It goes from west of State Street to Sandy Elementary School. Many historic buildings are located along this street. The school itself is within the historic district.

In some places, you can still see water flowing in gutters along the streets. This was common in early settlements. It helped with irrigation. The East Jordan Canal also runs through the middle of the district. This larger canal carries water north from the Jordan River.

The district is easy to reach by public transport. The UTA TRAX light rail system serves the area. You can get off at the Historic Sandy station. This station is south of Main Street. It is also a few blocks east of State Street.
