Sandy River (South Carolina) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Sandy River and its smaller friend, the Little Sandy River, are two short rivers found in the northern part of South Carolina in the United States. The Sandy River flows into the Broad River. From there, its water joins the Congaree River and then the Santee River, which eventually flows all the way to the big Atlantic Ocean. This means the Sandy River is part of the huge water system, or watershed, that drains into the Santee River.

Where Do the Sandy Rivers Flow?

The Sandy River spends almost all its journey flowing through Chester County. It starts near a small place called Lowrys. This is about 7 miles (11 km) northwest of the town of Chester. The river then flows generally towards the southwest. For about 1 mile (2 km) near its end, it helps mark the border between Chester County and Fairfield County.

The Sandy River finally flows into the Broad River from the east. This happens right on the county border, inside the Sumter National Forest. It's about 3 miles (5 km) southwest of the town of Carlisle.

The Little Sandy River's Journey

The Little Sandy River, sometimes called "Hueys Creek" or "Prices Fork" in old records, flows entirely within the southern part of Chester County. It begins its journey about 5 miles (8 km) south of the town of Chester. From there, it flows westward until it meets the Sandy River. This meeting point is about 4 miles (7 km) northeast of where the Sandy River joins the Broad River.
