Sanford is a small village located in Midland County, which is part of the U.S. state of Michigan. In 2020, about 813 people lived there. The village is found within Jerome Township.

History of Sanford

Early Beginnings

Sanford's story began in 1864. A man named Charles Sanford from Madison County, New York, bought a large piece of land here. He purchased about 213 acres where the village now stands. He also bought 1,000 acres of pine forest nearby.

This area was first known as the "Salt-Spring Reserve." It was important because it had the first salt well in Michigan. A state surveyor and geologist named Douglass Houghton helped dig this well.

Charles Sanford moved to the area in May 1864. He officially planned out the village in 1870. The first post office, called "Sanfordville," opened in 1871. The name was shortened to "Sanford" a few months later. Also in 1871, the Pere Marquette Railroad built a train station in Sanford, which helped the village grow.

Becoming a Village

In 1963, the people living in Sanford voted to become an official village. This meant they would have their own local government. Later, in 1982, voters tried to cancel this decision, but a Michigan court said the vote wasn't done correctly. So, Sanford remained a village.

Recent Events

On May 19, 2020, a significant event happened in Sanford. The Sanford Dam and the Edenville Dam on the Tittabawassee River broke. This caused a lot of flooding. People in the village had to leave their homes for safety. The downtown area of Sanford was greatly affected by the floodwaters.
