History of Sant Feliu de Codines
How Sant Feliu Got Its Name
The name Sant Feliu first appeared in records in the year 1059. At that time, a nobleman named Mir Geribert and his wife Guisla were given the title of Barons of Montbui. This title was given by Ramon Berenguer I, who was a powerful ruler.
These barons were the first feudal lords of the area. A feudal lord was like a powerful landowner who controlled a large region. Their land, called a barony, included what is now Sant Feliu and other nearby towns.
Growing into a Town
Over many centuries, Sant Feliu became the most important part of the barony. It had more people and produced more crafts than other areas. Because of this, the people of Sant Feliu wanted to be independent from the Montbui barony.
After asking many times, and when the political situation was right, their wish came true. In 1793, King Charles IV gave Sant Feliu de Codines the special title of Vila. This meant it was officially recognized as a town, starting on December 8, 1799.
How the Town Developed
The town first grew around its main church. This area was called the Sagrera neighborhood, which means "sacred land." Today, you can still see narrow streets and old buildings there.
As the town grew, other important neighborhoods formed. These included Serrat de Vic and Venderia (also called Revenderia). For a while, there was a strong rivalry between these two neighborhoods. The Venderia even built its own bell tower in 1796!
Eventually, the rivalry faded away. More neighborhoods and living areas were built, forming the Sant Feliu de Codines we see today.
A Place to Live and Relax
Sant Feliu has a mostly dry climate and beautiful natural surroundings. It is also close to bigger cities. These things made it a popular place for people to live and travel to in the late 1800s. It became known as a "bedroom community," where people live but might work in a nearby larger city.
Famous Visitors to Sant Feliu

One very famous person who visited Sant Feliu was Antoni Gaudí. He was a brilliant architect known for his unique buildings. Gaudí designed the banner for the local music group, the Orfeó Feliuà. You can see this special banner at the Can Xifreda Municipal Museum.
Dr. Bartomeu Robert's Recommendation
