Just like in Spain, many towns in Puerto Rico have a central area called a pueblo. This pueblo usually has a main public square, the city hall, and a Catholic church. Every year, special patron saint festivals are held in this central square.

Exploring Santa Isabel's Central Plaza
The central plaza, or town square, is a very important place in Santa Isabel. It's used for both official events and fun activities. People can gather here to socialize from morning until night.
Why Plazas Are Important
Spanish laws from the early 1800s, called the Laws of the Indies, guided how towns in Puerto Rico were built. These laws said that the plaza should be "a place for parties" (meaning celebrations and festivities). They also stated that the square should be big enough for all the people living nearby. The laws also made sure that the streets around the plaza had comfortable walkways. These walkways were designed to protect people from the sun and rain.
The Church of Saint James the Apostle
Right across from the central plaza in Santa Isabel barrio-pueblo, you'll find the Church of Saint James the Apostle. In Spanish, it's called Parroquia Santiago Apostol. This is a Roman Catholic church.
A Glimpse into Santa Isabel's Past
Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States after the Spanish–American War. This happened because of the Treaty of Paris of 1898. In 1899, the United States government took a census (a count of the population) in Puerto Rico. The census found that the combined population of Santa Isabel Pueblo and Playa areas was 1,142 people.
