Exploring Santana's Past
Santana has an interesting history, especially how it became part of the United States. Let's look at some key moments in its past.
How Puerto Rico Became a U.S. Territory
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. This treaty ended the war. As a result, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is a part of the U.S. but does not have all the same rights as a state.
Early Population Counts in Santana
In 1899, the United States government wanted to know how many people lived in Puerto Rico. The United States Department of War conducted a survey, which is like a big count of everyone. This survey found that 921 people lived in the Santana barrio at that time. Over the years, the population of Santana has grown quite a bit.
