Santiago Abascal Conde, born on April 14, 1976, is a Spanish politician. Since September 2014, he has been the leader of a political party called Vox. He is also a member of the Spanish Parliament, representing Madrid since 2019. In November 2024, he also became the president of a European political group called Patriots.eu.
Before starting Vox, Abascal was a member of the People's Party. He served as a lawmaker in the Basque Parliament. He also started a group called the Foundation for the Defense of the Spanish Nation (DENAES).

Santiago Abascal's Life Story
Growing Up in Spain
Santiago Abascal was born in Bilbao, a city in Spain. He grew up in the Province of Álava. His father, Santiago Abascal Escuza, was also a politician. His grandfather, Manuel Abascal Pardo, was a mayor in the town of Amurrio for many years.
Because of their political work, Abascal's family faced threats from a group called ETA.
His Journey in Politics
Abascal joined the People's Party when he was 18 years old in 1994. He served as a city council member in Llodio from 1999 to 2007. He was also a member of the Basque Parliament for a few years.
After his time in Basque politics, he worked for the Community of Madrid government. He led the Data Protection Agency and later a foundation.
In 2013, Abascal left the People's Party. He then helped create a new political party called Vox. After an election in 2014 where Vox did not win any seats, Abascal became the new president of the party.
Since May 2019, Abascal has been a member of the Congreso de los Diputados, which is part of the Spanish Parliament. His party, Vox, became the third-largest party in the 2019 election. During election campaigns in 2020 and 2021, some of Abascal's speeches were interrupted by political opponents.

Views on Immigration
He believes that if Spain is to have immigrants, they should come legally. He prefers immigrants from Latin American countries because they often speak Spanish and share similar values. He has suggested that immigrants from Latin America are different from those from Muslim countries. Abascal also wants to set limits on how many immigrants can come to Spain.
He has called for building "strong walls" in the Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla, which are located in Africa. He also wants to make it harder for illegal immigrants to enter Spain.
