Playing for Clubs: A Football Journey
Santiago Urkiaga was born in Barakaldo, a town in Biscay, Spain. He spent most of his football career playing for local teams.
Time with Athletic Bilbao
Urkiaga played for Athletic Bilbao for nine seasons. This team is very famous in Spain. He was a key player when the club won the La Liga championship two times in a row, in 1983 and 1984. During these winning seasons, he started every one of the 67 games he played.
He made his first appearance in La Liga on May 13, 1979. In total, he played 345 official games for Athletic Bilbao and scored seven goals.
Moving to RCD Español
After his time at Athletic Bilbao, Urkiaga played his last two seasons with RCD Español. His old coach, Javier Clemente, was the manager there. In his first year with Español, the team reached the final of the UEFA Cup in 1988. This was a very big achievement! However, they lost the final to a German team, Bayer 04 Leverkusen, after a penalty shootout.
Santiago Urkiaga stopped playing professional football in June 1989, when he was 31 years old.
Playing for Spain: International Games
Urkiaga also played for the Spanish national team. He played 14 games for his country over four years. These games are called "caps."
Major Tournaments
He was part of the Spanish squad for the 1982 FIFA World Cup. He also played in the UEFA Euro 1984 tournament. In Euro 1984, he was a first-choice player, meaning he started most games. Spain finished second in that tournament, losing to the host country, France.
His first game for the national team was on March 26, 1980. It was a friendly match against England in Barcelona. Urkiaga also played football at the 1980 Summer Olympics.
