What's in a Name? The Tsáchila People
The name "de los Colorados" means "of the Dyed Ones." This part of the name comes from a local group of people called the Tsáchila. The men in this tribe have a special custom: they dye their hair with a red plant extract called achiote. This is why the city is called "Santo Domingo of the Dyed."
The Tsáchila people are native to this area. There's even a large statue near the city center that honors them.
Where is Santo Domingo Located?
Santo Domingo is about 133 kilometers (83 miles) west of Quito, the capital city of Ecuador. It sits at an elevation of 625 meters (2,051 feet) above sea level.
The city is located in the foothills on the western side of the Andes mountains. It's a very important stop for travelers going from Quito to the Pacific coast. Santo Domingo also connects to other cities in the lowlands, such as Quevedo, Chone, and Quinindé.
The city is also home to the main church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Santo Domingo de los Colorados.
Santo Domingo's Climate
Santo Domingo has a tropical monsoon climate. This means it has a wet season and a dry season, but it's generally warm and humid. The average temperature is around 22 degrees Celsius (71 degrees Fahrenheit).
Because of its location, Santo Domingo can experience floods easily. Roads that connect Quito to coastal cities like Esmeraldas and Manta often get washed out. This means they need to be repaired frequently.
