A Look Back: The Church's Story
How the Church Started
The church community, called a parish, began a long time ago on October 12, 1849. This was during a time of conflict in Uruguay known as the Guerra Grande.
Building the Sanctuary
In 1896, a bishop named Mariano Soler blessed the first stone for the church building. However, building the church took many years, even decades! It was finally finished and officially opened in 1930. Since then, it has been a very important and well-known building in the neighborhood.
Special Dedications and Recognition
The church is looked after by a group called the Congregation of the Mission. It is dedicated to two important figures: Saint Augustine and the Virgin Mary of the Miraculous Medal. A leader named Cardinal Antonio Barbieri played a big part in this dedication. Because of its special dedication, the sanctuary is now a place where people go on a spiritual journey, called a pilgrimage. In 1975, the church was recognized as a National Monument, meaning it's a very important historical building for the country.
Music at the Church
The Montevideo Philharmonic Orchestra sometimes holds concerts inside the church. This makes the church a place for both spiritual events and beautiful music.
Other Churches with the Same Name
There is another church in Uruguay that is also dedicated to the Miraculous Medal:
- Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Parish Church in San Isidro, which is close to Las Piedras.
