Sapiah was a very important leader of the Southern Ute tribe. He led his people from 1880 until he passed away in 1936. He was born around 1840, before many settlements were built on Ute lands. His father was a Moache Ute, and his mother was Apache. Sapiah was known by another name: Buckskin Charley. He learned English and even took the name Charles Buck.

Who Was Buckskin Charley?

Buckskin Charley was a respected leader among the Ute people. He was recognized as the Chief of the Mauche and Servero Bands. He was also the main Chief of the Capote. After Chief Ouray passed away, Buckskin Charley took over his important role. He became the official person who negotiated treaties for his tribe. Treaties are like special agreements between different groups of people or governments.

A Brave Leader for His People

Buckskin Charley was known for his bravery and his dedication to his people. One important event showed his courage. He led a rescue mission to save women and children. These people had been taken during a difficult time known as the Meeker Massacre. His actions helped bring safety to many.

Working with Presidents

Buckskin Charley met with important leaders of the United States. In 1890, he received a special award from President Benjamin Harrison. This award was called the Rutherford Hayes Indian Peace Medal. It was a symbol of peace and respect.

Years later, in 1905, Buckskin Charley took part in a very special event. He rode with the famous Apache leader Geronimo in President Theodore Roosevelt's inaugural parade. An inaugural parade happens when a new president officially takes office. This showed how respected Buckskin Charley was, even by the President of the United States.

His Lasting Legacy

Buckskin Charley led his people for many years. He worked hard to protect their rights and their lands. When he passed away in 1936, his son continued his legacy. His son, Antonio Buck Sr., became the next hereditary chief. He also became the first elected chairman of the Southern Ute tribe. This meant he was chosen by the people to lead them in a new way. Buckskin Charley's leadership helped shape the future of the Southern Ute people.
