Sara Shepard (born April 8, 1977) is an American author famous for writing exciting mystery books for teens. She is best known for her bestselling book series Pretty Little Liars and The Lying Game. Both of these popular series were turned into hit television shows.
Early Life and Writing Career
Sara Shepard grew up in Pennsylvania with her sister, Alison. After graduating from high school in 1995, she went to college in New York City. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from New York University and later a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from Brooklyn College.
Before she became a famous author, Shepard worked for a publishing company. She also worked as a "ghostwriter," which means she helped write books for other people. In 2005, she began writing her own novels, and her career took off. Today, she lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
From Books to TV Shows
Many of Sara Shepard's thrilling books have been adapted into television shows, bringing her mysterious worlds to the screen.
Pretty Little Liars
The Pretty Little Liars book series was turned into a very popular TV show on the channel Freeform. Shepard has said the stories were inspired by her own experiences growing up in Chester County, Pennsylvania.
The TV show, Pretty Little Liars, ran for seven seasons. It starred Troian Bellisario as Spencer, Ashley Benson as Hanna, Shay Mitchell as Emily, and Lucy Hale as Aria. Sara Shepard even made a couple of fun cameo appearances on the show. She played a substitute teacher in one episode and a news reporter in another!
The Lying Game
Shepard's book series The Lying Game also became a TV show. It was about twin sisters, Sutton and Emma, who were separated at birth. The show, The Lying Game, aired for two seasons before it was canceled in 2013.
Other TV and Web Projects
More of Shepard's books have been adapted for TV. Her series The Perfectionists was turned into a show called Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists. It was a sequel to the original Pretty Little Liars show and brought back characters like Alison DiLaurentis and Mona Vanderwaal.
Shepard has also worked on other creative projects. She helped produce a web series called Crown Lake and has created several podcast series, including Cruise Ship and Memory Lane.
