Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology (SIST) is a private research university in Chennai, India. It was founded in 1987 by Jeppiaar Jesuadimai. The school is known for its focus on STEM subjects like engineering and science.
SIST is a Christian minority school. Its main campus is in the Sholinganallur area of Chennai. It also has a dental college and a second campus nearby. The university is very large, with over 15,000 students.
One of its most exciting projects was building its own satellite! In 2016, SIST launched the SathyabamaSat into space with help from ISRO, India's national space agency. The university has received a top grade of 'A++' from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), which is like getting an A+ on a report card for schools.

History of the University
The school first opened in 1987 as Sathyabama Engineering College. Its founder, Jeppiaar Jesuadimai, wanted to provide great technical education for Christian students in South India.
In 2001, the school was given "deemed-to-be-university" status. This special title from the government means it can set its own courses and award its own degrees, just like a major university. Over the years, it added more subjects like law, science, and management. The dental college opened in 2009.
Campus and Location
The main campus is a large, 140-acre area in Sholinganallur, Chennai. It is located along a major road known as the "IT Corridor." The campus has many blue and white buildings, including separate dorms for male and female students.
An interesting fact is that the campus was built over an old swamp. This sometimes causes flooding when it rains heavily.
To accept more students, the university opened a second campus in Sriperumbudur. This campus also offers engineering and science courses. The two campuses are about 45 kilometers apart.
What Can You Study at Sathyabama?
Sathyabama has 15 different departments. They offer many courses for students, mostly in engineering and technology. Students can also study law, medicine, architecture, and business.
Here are some of the main fields of study:
- Engineering: Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical (airplane) Engineering, and many more.
- Architecture: Designing buildings, landscapes, and interiors.
- Medicine and Pharmacy: Dental Surgery, Nursing, Pharmacy, and other health sciences.
- Law: Studying to become a lawyer, with focuses on different types of law.
- Arts, Science, and Humanities: Business, Physics, Chemistry, Fashion Design, Psychology, and Hotel Management.
Ratings and Recognition
Sathyabama is a well-respected university. It has earned an 'A++' grade from the NAAC, which is the highest rating. It is also recognized as a 'Category 1 University' by the UGC.
The university has also received five stars for excellence from Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a company that ranks universities worldwide. This makes it one of only 40 universities in India to achieve this. Many of its courses are approved by official groups like the Bar Council of India for law and the Dental Council of India for dentistry.
Teaming Up with ISRO
One of the university's biggest achievements was working with ISRO, the Indian Space Research Organisation. In 2009, they agreed to build a satellite together. The project was called SathyabamaSat.
Students and teachers worked with ISRO scientists for seven years to design and build the small satellite. The goal was to give students real-world experience in space technology. In 2016, the satellite was successfully launched into space to collect data about weather.
University Rankings
Universities are often ranked to see how they compare to others. In 2024, the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranked Sathyabama 85th overall in India. It was ranked 51st among universities and 66th among engineering colleges.
Globally, the QS World University Rankings for 2024-2025 placed Sathyabama in the top 1201-1400 universities in the world.

Cool Research Centers and Labs
Sathyabama has many special centers where students can work on exciting projects and research.
Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology
This center works with things that are incredibly tiny—even smaller than a cell! Scientists here study new materials, thin coatings, and how nanotechnology can help the environment and medicine.
Aeronautical Hangars
The university has three huge hangars, which are like giant garages for aircraft. Here, students build model airplanes, wind turbines, and other parts for aviation research. The SathyabamaSat satellite was also built in these hangars.
Central Library
The Dr. Jeppiaar Central Library is a large library with over 313,000 books. It also provides online access to thousands of science and engineering journals from around the world.
Center for Ocean Research
This center studies the ocean and marine technology. It works with government groups to research marine life and other topics related to the sea.
Center for Climate Change Studies
Founded in 2011, this center researches how climate change affects the environment. It studies how to protect important natural areas like forests and coral reefs.
