Sauget is a small village in St. Clair County, Illinois, in the United States. It is part of the larger Greater St. Louis area. In 2020, about 141 people lived there.

Where is Sauget Located?
Sauget is located at coordinates 38°35′13″N 90°10′0″W / 38.58694°N 90.16667°W. It covers an area of about 4.59 square miles (11.89 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.
The village is in a flat area called the American Bottom. This area is a floodplain of the Mississippi River, right across from St. Louis, Missouri.
A Brief History of Sauget Village
Sauget was first created in 1926. It was originally named "Monsanto" after the chemical company. The village was formed to offer lower taxes and fewer rules for the Monsanto chemical plants. This was at a time when local governments were mostly in charge of environmental rules.
The village was later renamed to honor Leo Sauget. He was the first president of the village. One reason for forming the village was to get federal money. This money was only available to official government groups, not private businesses.
How Sauget Helps the Environment
The village of Sauget runs a very important facility. It is called the American Bottoms Treatment Plant. This large plant cleans sewage (wastewater) for much of the St. Louis area on the Illinois side.
Sauget also has a special plant that cleans industrial wastewater. This water comes from factories in the area. It is one of only a few municipal plants like this in the United States.
Past Environmental Challenges
The Monsanto plant in Sauget used to make a chemical called PCBs. This was before PCBs were banned in 1977. The EPA has marked the plant site as a Superfund site. This means it needs special cleaning due to past pollution.

Even though Sauget has a small population, it has its own services. It has a 16-member fire department. It also has a 16-member police department. This means there is about one officer or firefighter for every 15 residents. The village also provides water and wastewater services to its residents.
Sports and Culture in Sauget
Sauget is home to a minor league baseball team. They are called the Gateway Grizzlies. They play in the Frontier League. The team is controlled by the Sauget family.
The village also has the National Building Arts Center. This organization works to save old buildings and their parts. It has one of the largest collections of important architectural pieces in the U.S.
