Savane Lake is a freshwater lake in Quebec, Canada. It's located northeast of Quebec City. This lake is found in the Capitale-Nationale area.

The lake stretches across two different regions. One part is in La Côte-de-Beaupré Regional County Municipality. The other part is in Charlevoix Regional County Municipality.

Forestry, which is cutting down trees, is the main activity here. Tourism, like visiting for fun, is also important. The lake's surface freezes over in winter. This usually happens from late November to early April. It's safe to walk on the ice from early December.

Where is Savane Lake?

Savane Lake is a deep lake surrounded by mountains. It is located at an altitude of 812 metres (2,664 ft). The eastern side of the lake is part of the Laurentides Wildlife Reserve.

The lake is about 3.8 kilometres (2.4 mi) long. It is also about 0.9 kilometres (0.56 mi) wide. The water flows out of the lake on its northeast side. This water then goes into the Rivière Savane du Nord.

How the Lake Gets its Water

Savane Lake gets its water from several places:

  • A stream called Portage stream flows in from the south. It brings water from six smaller lakes.
  • Water also comes from Lake Mestashibo, located to the east.
  • Two streams flow into the lake from the west.
  • Another stream comes in from the east.

History of the Lake

Savane Lake is not entirely natural. A dam was built at its outlet in 1923. This dam helped control the water for a power station. The power station was called Sept-Chutes. It was on the Sainte-Anne river.

The power station stopped working in 1983. Since then, the old wooden dam is no longer used. From the lake's outlet, the water flows into the Rivière Savane du Nord. This river then joins the Sainte-Anne river. The Sainte-Anne river flows all the way to the Saint Lawrence River.

What's in a Name?

In the past, people called this lake "Grand lac Savane." The name "lac Savane" was officially recognized on December 5, 1968. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec.
