Savari de Mauléon (also Savaury) (Occitan: Savaric de Malleo) was a brave French soldier who lived a long time ago. He was the son of Raoul de Mauléon, who was a Viscount of Thouars and a lord. Savari was known for being a skilled leader and for his changing loyalties between the English and French kings. He also wrote poems!

Savari's Early Life and Role with King John

Savari de Mauléon was born around 1181 in Mauléon, a place in France. He became a soldier and quickly gained a reputation.

In 1204, John, King of England freed Savari and convinced him to join his side. King John then made Savari the Seneschal of Poitou in 1205. A seneschal was like a chief officer or governor in charge of a region.

Military Adventures and Changing Sides

Savari was involved in many battles and often switched his support between the English and French kings.

In 1211, he helped Raymond VI, Count of Toulouse, in a fight against Simon de Montfort, 5th Earl of Leicester. They tried to capture Simon in Castelnaudary.

The next year, in 1212, Philip II of France hired Savari to lead a fleet of ships. However, this fleet was destroyed in the port of Damme in Flanders. After this, Savari returned to King John's side. He helped King John during the First Barons' War from 1215 to 1217.

When King John died in 1216, he chose Savari to be part of a special group. This group was called a "regency council." Their job was to help govern England for the new, young king, Henry III.

Crusades and Defending French Lands

In 1218, Savari might have helped Alfonso IX of León in an attempt to capture the city of Cáceres in Spain.

The next year, in 1219, Savari traveled to Egypt. He was there when the city of Damietta was captured during a major religious war called a Crusade.

After returning to Poitou, Savari again became a seneschal for King Henry III of England. He worked to defend the region of Saintonge against Louis VIII in 1224.

Later, Savari was suspected of giving up the city of La Rochelle to the French king. Because of these suspicions from the English, he ended up working for the French king instead. Louis VIII then put Savari in charge of defending La Rochelle and the coast of Saintonge.

Later Life and Poetry

In 1227, Savari joined a group of nobles who rose up against the young French king, Louis IX. This happened in the regions of Poitiers and Anjou.

Besides being a soldier and a leader, Savari de Mauléon was also known for his poems. He wrote them in the Langue d'oc, which was a language spoken in southern France.
