Savukoski (also known as Suovvaguoika in Sami languages) is a small town, or more accurately, a municipality in Finland. It is located far north in a region called Lapland.

Savukoski is a very large area, but not many people live there. It has one of the lowest population densities in all of Finland. This means there are very few people per square kilometer. The main language spoken here is Finnish.

Home of Father Christmas

One of the most exciting things about Savukoski is that it's believed to be the secret home of Father Christmas (or Joulupukki, as he's called in Finland)! According to Finnish stories, his hidden workshop is on a Fell called Korvatunturi.

The name Korvatunturi means "Ear Fell" in English. Kids in Finland are told that Father Christmas can hear everything children say from this special place. This helps him know who has been good and deserves gifts!

Nature and Livelihoods

Savukoski is a place of beautiful nature. The big Kemijoki river flows through it. Because there are so few people, nature is very wild and open.

For a long time, people in Savukoski have made their living from two main things:

  • Forestry: This involves managing and using the forests.
  • Reindeer husbandry: This means raising and caring for reindeer. There are actually ten times more reindeer than people living in Savukoski!

Recently, tourism has also become more important. People visit Savukoski to enjoy the quiet nature and perhaps even try to spot a reindeer or two.

Part of the large Urho Kekkonen National Park is also located in Savukoski. This park is a great place for hiking and enjoying the wilderness.

Longest Place Name

Savukoski is home to a very unusual place: a bog region called Äteritsiputeritsipuolilautatsijänkä. This name is famous for being the longest place name in all of Finland! Try saying that five times fast!

Notable People

  • Markus Mustajärvi (born 1963) is a Finnish politician who comes from Savukoski. A politician is someone who works in government and helps make decisions for the country or a region.
