Sawyer is in an area that was once part of the Choctaw Nation. This was a large area where the Choctaw people lived and had their own government. Sawyer was specifically located in a part called Kiamitia County.

On November 4, 2022, a very strong tornado, called an EF4 tornado, passed just east of Sawyer. This storm was part of a larger tornado outbreak.

Sawyer is found in the eastern part of Choctaw County. It sits near the Kiamichi River at a place called Hugo Dam. The town's boundaries stretch north along the east side of Hugo Lake. They also reach west to touch the southwest side of the lake.

U.S. Route 70 goes right through Sawyer. If you drive west on this road for about 8 miles (13 km), you will reach Hugo. Hugo is the main city and county seat of Choctaw County. If you drive east for about 6 miles (10 km) on the same road, you will get to Fort Towson.
