The community of Saxon has been around for a long time. A post office opened here in 1887. The name "Saxon" comes from the Saxons, who were an ancient German people.

One important person in Saxon's history was Joseph J. Defer. He lived from 1866 to 1929. Joseph Defer was the postmaster of Saxon from 1904 to 1914. This means he was in charge of the local post office.
He also served as the sheriff of Iron County. A sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer for a county. Besides his public service, Joseph Defer owned a general store and a sawmill in Saxon. He also served in the Wisconsin Assembly in 1919 and 1920. The Wisconsin Assembly is part of the state's government that makes laws.
