Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Sayyid dynasty was an important group of rulers in India. It was the fourth dynasty to rule the Delhi Sultanate. This dynasty ruled North India from 1414 to 1451. It was the shortest-ruling dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate. The Sayyid dynasty was started by a former governor of Multan. They took over after the Tughlaq dynasty and were later replaced by the Lodi dynasty.

History of the Sayyid Dynasty

After Amir Timur invaded Delhi in 1398, he chose the Sayyids to govern the area. The Sayyid dynasty was founded by Sayyid Khizr Khan. Timur had made Khizr Khan the governor of Multan in the Punjab.

On May 28, 1414, Khizr Khan captured Delhi from Daulat Khan Lodi. This is how he started the Sayyid dynasty.

Khizr Khan's son, Sayyid Mubarak Shah, became the next ruler. He took over after his father died on May 20, 1421. Mubarak Shah called himself Muizz-ud-Din Mubarak Shah on his coins.

After Mubarak Shah passed away, his nephew, Muhammad Shah, became king. Muhammad Shah's son, Sayyid Ala-ud-Din Shah, then took the throne. Alam Shah was not a strong ruler. In 1451, he gave up Delhi to Bahlul Lodi. Alam Shah then moved to Budaun, where he lived the rest of his life.
