The company started as Scitex in Israel in 1968. It was founded by Efraim Arazi, and for a while, it was seen as a very important and successful Israeli company. Scitex focused on creating special equipment and systems for graphic design, printing, and publishing.

In 1985, Scitex teamed up with the Continental Can Company to create a new company called Contex Graphics Systems. This company was one of the first to develop 2D and 3D design systems using powerful computers called Silicon Graphics workstations.

Changes Over the Years

By the late 1990s, Scitex had three main parts:

  • Its main graphics art group, which was bought by Creo Products Inc. in April 2000.
  • Scitex Digital Printing, located in Dayton, Ohio, which was sold to Eastman Kodak Company in January 2004.
  • Scitex Vision, which was sold to Hewlett-Packard (HP) in November 2005.

Yoav Chelouche was the CEO and President of the company from 1995 to 2001.

After selling Scitex Vision to HP, the company changed its name to Scailex Corporation Ltd. on December 29, 2005. Over the years, Scailex went through many changes in what it did. In August 2009, Scailex bought a large share in Partner Communications, a big cell phone company in Israel. However, it sold this share between 2014 and 2015.

In 2016, Scailex became part of Suny Cellular Communication. Suny Cellular Communication was first started in 1994 to import and sell Sega games in Israel. Since 1998, it has mostly focused on bringing in, selling, and marketing Samsung Mobile devices in Israel.

Scitex Digital Printing: High-Speed Printers

Scitex Digital Printing, Inc. was a company in the U.S. that belonged entirely to Scitex. It was based in Dayton, Ohio. This company created and sold very fast, computer-controlled inkjet printers that could print different information on each item.

Scitex bought this division from Kodak in June 1993 for $70 million. It was then sold back to Kodak in January 2004 for $250 million and was renamed Kodak Versamark.

Scitex Vision: Large-Format Printing

Scitex Vision was an Israeli company that made equipment for printing very large pictures on paper and other special materials. The company started as Idanit Technologies Ltd. in May 1994.

Scitex bought Idanit Technologies in February 1998, and its name changed to Scitex Wide Format Printing Ltd. In October 1998, it grew by buying the large-format product line from the Matan group of companies. On August 21, 2000, it officially became Scitex Vision.

In January 2003, Scitex Vision merged with Aprion Digital Ltd. (which we'll talk about below). After the merger, Scitex owned 75% of the new company, which was still called Scitex Vision Ltd.

The operations of Scitex Vision, which was located in Netanya, Israel, along with the rights to use the "Scitex" name, were bought by Hewlett-Packard (HP) in November 2005. HP then renamed it HP Scitex.

Other Companies Scitex Invested In

Scitex also invested in several other companies. Here are a few examples:

  • Creo Products Inc. This Canadian company made solutions for the graphics arts industry. Scitex gained 28.7% of Creo's shares in April 2000 when it sold its own graphics arts operations to Creo. These operations were first known as CreoScitex. Scitex slowly sold its shares and, by August 2003, had sold its remaining 6.5%. In 2005, Creo (including the former Scitex operations) was bought by Eastman Kodak.
  • Jemtex Ink Jet Printing Ltd. This company, based in Lod, Israel, developed and made inkjet printheads for large industrial printing. Scitex started investing in Jemtex in May 2000 when it was a new company. By August 2006, Scitex owned 75% of Jemtex. It then agreed to sell most of its share to Jemtex's senior management, reducing its stake to 15%.
  • Objet Geometries Ltd. This company, based in Rehovot, Israel, developed and produced 3D inkjet modeling applications. Scitex first bought an 18.7% share in this new company in May 2000, and its share grew over time. In June 2005, Scitex sold all its interest, which was then 22.9%.
  • RealTimeImage (RTI) RTI developed internet-based imaging products for graphic arts and medical uses. It was based in San Bruno, California, and Or Yehuda, Israel.
