What's in a Name?
Scammon Bay got its name from Charles Melville Scammon. He was a leader of the marine (sea) part of the Western Union Telegraph Expedition. William Healey Dall named the area after him in 1870.
A special local dish is also named after Scammon. It's a mix of scrambled eggs and salmon. This dish uses a lot of salmon because there's so much of it in the local waters. Some people think the name "scammon" for the dish comes from "scrambled salmon," but that's not true. The town was named first, and then the dish got its name.
