The Story of Schlotzsky's
In 1971, a couple named Don and Dolores Dissman started Schlotzsky's. They opened their first small shop in Austin, Texas. At first, they only sold one type of sandwich. This special sandwich was called "The Original." It had different meats, cheeses, and black olives, all served on a freshly baked, toasted bun. This sandwich was inspired by a traditional sandwich called a muffuletta.
Growing the Business
By 1981, Schlotzsky's had grown to 100 franchise stores. A franchise is a business where someone buys the right to use a company's name and sell its products. At this time, some investors bought the company. The new owners, John and Jeff Wooley, decided to add more items to the menu. They introduced specialty pizzas, toasted wraps, salads, and soups.
In 1995, the Wooley brothers made Schlotzsky's a public company. This meant that people could buy shares of the company's ownership on the stock market.
Challenges and Changes
Schlotzsky's reached its biggest size in 2001, with 759 stores and over $400 million in sales. However, after this, the company faced some challenges. In 2004, Schlotzsky's had financial difficulties. To help fix things, the company decided to reorganize its business.
Later in 2004, a new owner, Bobby Cox Companies, took over Schlotzsky's. They worked hard to make the company stronger. They improved how they worked with their franchise owners and simplified the menu. They also started planning to open new company-owned stores.
New Ownership and Modern Look
In 2006, Schlotzsky's was bought by Focus Brands. This company also owns other well-known brands like Moe's Southwest Grill, Carvel, Cinnabon, and Auntie Anne's.
After this, Schlotzsky's began to update its restaurants. They gave them a "Lotz Better" new look with bright colors and modern furniture. They also added Cinnabon items to their menu, offering sweet treats alongside their savory sandwiches and pizzas.
Catchy Slogans
Schlotzsky's has had many memorable slogans over the years. The current slogan, launched in 2021, is "It's a mouthful."
Some of their past slogans include:
- "All 'Round, Lotz Better"
- "Lotz Better"
- "Every Bite Lotz Better"
- "Funny name. Serious sandwich"
- "No substituteskys"
- "Just one sandwich, it's that good."
