Schodack Island State Park is a cool place to visit in New York. It's a big state park that covers about 1,052 acres (4.26 km2). This park is special because it stretches across three different counties: Rensselaer, Greene, and Columbia.

The park sits right between the famous Hudson River and a smaller waterway called Schodack Creek. It first opened its doors to visitors in 2002. Before it was called Schodack Island State Park, it was known as Castleton Island State Park.

Discovering Schodack Island State Park's Past

Have you ever wondered where names come from? The name "Schodack" has a cool history! It comes from the Mahican language. The Mahican people used to live in this area.

What Does "Schodack" Mean?

The word "Schodack" combines two Mahican terms: ishoda and akee. Ishoda means "fire plain," and akee means "land." So, "Schodack" refers to the land where the Mahican people had their central council fire. This was a very important meeting place for them.

How the Islands Became a Peninsula

Long ago, the area that is now the park was actually a group of six separate islands. But things changed in the early 1900s. A big project was started to create a deep channel in the Hudson River. This channel would help ships travel all the way to Albany.

To make the channel, workers built dikes (like walls) and used material dug from the river. This material was placed along and between the islands. Over time, this connected the islands, turning them into one continuous piece of land, a peninsula.

When the Park Was Created

The land for what is now Schodack Island State Park was first bought by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation in the 1970s. For many years, it remained undeveloped. It was just natural land, waiting for its turn to become a park.

The park officially opened in 2002. At first, it was only a "day-use" park. This meant people could visit during the day but couldn't stay overnight.

Adding Camping Fun

In 2013, there were exciting plans to add camping spots to the park. This was a big deal because it was the first new campground built by the New York State Office of Parks in about 35 years! The campsites were finally ready for people to enjoy in 2016. Now, you can spend the night under the stars right in the park!
