Schruns is a town in the Montafon valley in western Austria. It is about 690 meters (2,260 feet) above sea level. Schruns is located in the Bludenz district of Vorarlberg, Austria's westernmost state.
To the west of Schruns is the famous Zimba mountain. People often call it the "Vorarlberger Matterhorn" because it looks similar. This mountain is very popular for climbers and hikers.

Geography of Schruns
The Litz river flows through Schruns. This river is a branch of the Ill river. To the east of Schruns, there is a side valley called the Silbertal. This area has tall mountains that you can reach by train and ski lifts.
To the north of Schruns is Bartholomäberg. To the south is St. Gallenkirch, and to the west is Tschagguns. The closest larger town is Bludenz. About 45% of the area around Schruns is covered by forests. Another 18% is mountainous.
Getting Around Schruns
The Schruns railway station is the last stop on the Bludenz–Schruns railway line. This line is also known as the Montafonerbahn. There are two other train stations in Schruns: Tschagguns and Kaltenbrunnen. All these stations are served by the S4 regional train service. This train service is part of the Vorarlberg S-Bahn system.
Sports and Fun in Schruns
Since 2012, Schruns has been a host for the FIS Snowboard World Cup. This big snowboarding event happens every December. During the day, you can watch exciting snowboard cross races. These races take place on the Hochjoch mountain in the Silvretta Montafon ski area. In the evenings, there are concerts held in Schruns.
Schruns is also a great place for mountain biking and trail running. For over ten years, the town has hosted the M3 Montafon Bike Marathon. More than 500 bikers take part in this event.
Famous People Connected to Schruns
In the early 1920s, the famous writer Ernest Hemingway loved to ski in Schruns. He spent winters there with his first wife, Hadley, and their baby son. In his book A Moveable Feast, Hemingway wrote about staying and skiing in Schruns. He also worked on his book The Sun Also Rises while he was there.
In Hemingway's story "The Snows of Kilimanjaro," he mentions his memories of Schruns. These memories of snow and glacier skiing are a big contrast to the hot Serengeti Plain in the main story. They also hint at the journey to the snowy peak of Kilimanjaro.
Other notable people connected to Schruns include:
- Richard von Coudenhove-Kalergi: He was a politician and writer who died in Schruns in 1972.
- Elisabeth Schwarzkopf: A famous opera singer who lived in Schruns in her later years and died there in 2006.
- Georg Margreitter: A professional footballer who was born in Schruns in 1988. He plays for Grasshopper Club Zürich.
