Scott Mills' Radio Journey

Scott Mills has had a long and exciting career in radio. He started very young and has worked for many different stations.

Starting Out in Radio

Scott began his radio journey when he was just 16 years old. He sent many demo tapes to his local radio station, Power FM, in Hampshire. They gave him a chance to host shows for a week. Because he did so well, he was offered a regular late-night show. This made him the youngest full-time presenter on a big commercial radio station. Later, he moved to a show that played in the late afternoon, known as the 'drive time' slot.

After Power FM, Scott worked at GWR FM Bristol for two years. Then, he joined Piccadilly Key 103 in Manchester. He started with late-night shows there too, before moving to mid-morning. In 1995, Scott started working for a new station in London called Heart 106.2.

Scott has also done many voice-overs. He was the voice for in-store radio stations like Homebase FM. He also voiced Blockbuster TV and The VH1 Album Chart on the UK television channel VH1.

Time at BBC Radio 1

Scott Mills joined BBC Radio 1 in October 1998. He started by presenting the early morning show, from 4 am to 7 am. In January 2004, he moved to a weekend afternoon slot. Later that year, he moved to the weekday early-evening slot. This spot was open because Sara Cox was on maternity leave. When Sara did not return, Scott became the permanent host. His show was then named The Scott Mills Show. In April 2012, his show moved to the afternoon slot.

While at Radio 1, Scott also filled in for other presenters. He hosted The Official Chart from June 2018 to August 2022. On 1 July 2022, it was announced that Scott would leave Radio 1 after 24 years. He moved to BBC Radio 2 to take over from Steve Wright on Steve Wright in the Afternoon. Scott started his new show on 31 October 2022.

Moving to BBC Radio 2

Before joining BBC Radio 2 full-time, Scott often hosted shows there as a stand-in presenter. On 20 March 2017, he hosted a late-night show for Sara Cox's Dance-A-Thon. On 28 May 2018, he presented a Bank Holiday Monday show called Radio 2 Remix. He even hosted shows on both Radio 1 and Radio 2 on the same day!

In April 2019, Scott filled in for Rylan Clark on Radio 2's Saturday afternoon show. From 2021 to 2022, he was the regular stand-in for Ken Bruce. On 1 July 2022, it was confirmed that Scott would join Radio 2 permanently. He replaced Steve Wright in the Afternoon with his own show, running from 2-4 pm. His first show was on 31 October. On 19 November 2024, it was announced that Scott would replace Zoe Ball as the host of Radio 2's breakfast show. He will start this new role in January 2025.

Working at BBC Radio 5 Live

On 17 October 2019, it was announced that Scott Mills and his Radio 1 co-presenter Chris Stark would host a show on BBC Radio 5 Live. This show was part of the station's new weekend schedule. It started on 9 November 2019 and was broadcast from 9 am to 11 am. Their final show on Radio 5 Live was on 20 August 2022.

Scott Mills: The Musical

In May 2009, a musical about Scott Mills' life was announced. It was performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August 2009. The musical ran for three nights.
