Sir Scrope Bernard-Morland, 4th Baronet (born October 1, 1758 – died April 18, 1830) was an important British politician. He also held the title of Baronet, which is a special inherited title, like a knight, but it can be passed down through the family.

Early Life and Education

Scrope Bernard was born in Pestel Amberg (Perth Amboy), New Jersey. He was the youngest of six sons born to Sir Francis Bernard, 1st Baronet and Amelia Offley. In 1818, he became the 4th Baronet after his older brother, Thomas, passed away.

Scrope Bernard-Morland went to two well-known schools: Harrow School and Christ Church, Oxford University. He earned his first university degree in 1779. Two years later, he earned a higher degree. In 1788, he received a special law degree called a Doctor of Civil Laws.

In 1789, he joined the College of Laws in London, which is a group for legal experts. Later, in 1795, he became a judge in the Episcopal Court of Durham. In 1811, he added "Morland" to his last name. This was a special permission from the King, allowing him to inherit property from his father-in-law.

Political Career

Scrope Bernard-Morland had a long career in British politics.

  • From 1782 to 1787, he worked as the Private Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. This person was like the King's representative in Ireland.
  • In 1785, he was the Secretary for a group that looked into how public offices were run.
  • In 1787, he became the Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod in Ireland. This was an important role in the Irish Parliament.
  • From 1789 to 1792, he served as the Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department. This meant he helped manage internal affairs for the country.

Bernard-Morland also served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for many years.

  • He first joined the British House of Commons in 1789, representing the area of Aylesbury. He served there until 1802.
  • Later, he represented St Mawes from 1806 to 1808, and again from 1809 until his death in 1830.

Family Life

On July 26, 1785, Scrope Bernard-Morland married Harriett Morland. She was the only daughter of William Morland. They were married at St George's, Hanover Square, in Westminster, London.

They had seven children together: five sons and two daughters.

Scrope Bernard-Morland passed away at his home in Pall Mall, London, when he was 71 years old. He was buried in Great Kimble in Buckinghamshire, where he owned a large estate. After his death, his third son, Francis, became the next Baronet. Later, his fourth son, Thomas, inherited the title.
