Scrufizzer's Music Journey
Scrufizzer is part of a music group called Funkystepz. He released his first mixtape, My First Steps, in 2007. A mixtape is like an album, often released for free, to show off new music.
Many famous artists and DJs supported his music. These included Zane Lowe, Annie Mac, Dizzee Rascal, Ed Sheeran, and Wiley. Scrufizzer has performed with big names like Wiley and DJ Cameo. He even opened shows for Kendrick Lamar across the UK.
BBC Radio 1Xtra DJ, DJ Cameo, joined Kendrick Lamar's tour as Scrufizzer's DJ. DJ Cameo has called Scrufizzer his "protégé," meaning someone he guides and teaches. In 2013, a music review said Scrufizzer had "the quickest flow in the game." This means he could rap very fast. He quickly became one of the most exciting new artists in the grime music scene.
Working with Other Artists
Scrufizzer has worked on songs with many well-known artists. These include "Guts N' Glory" by Dizzee Rascal and "Werkin Girls" by Angel Haze. He also featured on "Kingpin" by DJ Friction & Skream.
Other collaborations include M. J. Cole's "Southern Electric" and Loadstar's "Do You Feel Me." He also appeared on "Code to Crack" by Toddla T & Cleo Sol. This song was first played on the radio by MistaJam. Scrufizzer also worked with Lunar C and Mic Righteous. He was featured on Danny Brown's 2013 album, Old.
His Unique Style
Scrufizzer is known for his special "fizzy flow." He mixes rap with modern grime music. Because of his unique sound, The Guardian newspaper named him one of the "ones to watch in 2013." This meant they thought he would become very popular.
His first official song, "Rap Rave," came out in January 2013. It was released by Stay Fizzy Records and Ministry of Sound. The Independent newspaper said Scrufizzer was one of the most highly rated young MCs in the new wave of music. "Rap Rave" was produced by Paperbwoy. It showed off Scrufizzer's clear "fizzy flow" and rapping skills. In early 2013, BBC 1xtra's Nick Bright said Scrufizzer was the fastest rapper in the UK.
Signing with Labels and Chart Success
In May 2013, Scrufizzer signed with Black Butter Records. This label is part of Polydor Records. He then released the song "Kick It" in October 2013. The song reached number 43 on the UK Singles Chart. The music video for "Kick It" was filmed in LA. It was directed by Mister Whitmore and featured a fun tribute to an old music video by Robert Palmer.
Festival Performances
Scrufizzer performed at many music festivals in the summer of 2013. These included FSTVL, London's Lovebox Festival, Global Gathering, and the BBC Radio 1Xtra Stage at Reading and Leeds Festival. He also performed at a Rudimental show in Ibiza. He even joined DJ Friction on stage at Creamfields and SW4 Festivals. There, he performed "Kingpin" and did a freestyle rap.
Scrufizzer and Politics
In November 2019, Scrufizzer helped restart the Grime4Corbyn campaign. This campaign encouraged young people to register and vote in elections. He wanted to make sure young people's voices were heard.
