Scurry is a small town located in Kaufman County, Texas, United States. It officially became an incorporated town in 2003. According to the 2020 census, about 688 people live there.
The town of Scurry is named after Scurry Dean. He was a person who died during the Civil War. When people living in the area wanted to open a post office, they chose his name to honor him. The post office opened in 1883.

Exploring Scurry's Location
Scurry is found along Texas State Highway 34 in the southwestern part of Kaufman County. It is about 7 miles (11 km) southwest of Kaufman. The big city of Dallas is about 34 miles (55 km) southeast of Scurry.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that Scurry covers an area of about 1.93 square miles (5.0 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
Scurry's Weather Patterns
The weather in Scurry usually has hot and humid summers. The winters are generally mild to cool. This type of weather is known as a humid subtropical climate. On climate maps, it is often marked as Cfa.
A Look Back at Scurry's History
The very first settlers arrived in the Scurry area in the mid-1840s. Over the next 25 years, a church and a school were built. More farms also started to appear.
When the Texas and Pacific Railway arrived in the 1870s, Scurry became an important place. Farmers used it to ship their crops. In 1883, a post office opened, named "Scurry" to honor Scurry Dean. By 1884, about 50 people lived in the community.
By 1914, Scurry had grown to about 400 people. Many businesses were also operating there. However, the Great Depression in the 1930s caused Scurry to shrink. This decline continued even after World War II. By the mid-1950s, only about 250 people remained.
Things started to change in the second half of the 20th century. By 1990, Scurry had 9 businesses and about 315 residents. This number grew to nearly 600 by the year 2000. Finally, in 2003, Scurry officially became an incorporated town.

Public schools in Scurry are part of the Scurry-Rosser Independent School District. This school district has three campuses. It also serves other nearby communities. These include Rosser, Cottonwood, and Grays Prairie. All these communities are in southwestern Kaufman County.
