The Allium falcifolium is a type of wild onion found in North America. People often call it the scytheleaf onion or coast flatstem onion. This plant grows naturally in northern California and southern Oregon. It likes to live in tough, rocky ground, especially a special kind of soil called serpentine soil.
Discovering the Scytheleaf Onion
What it Looks Like
The scytheleaf onion grows from a reddish-brown bulb. This bulb is usually about one to two centimeters wide.
Its stem is a mix of reddish or yellowish-green. It's also quite flat, being thicker in the middle and thinner along its sides.
This plant typically has two leaves. These leaves are curved, just like the blade of a scythe. This is how the plant got its common name!
The stem is short and has a cluster of flowers at its top. This cluster is called an inflorescence. It usually holds about 10 to 30 flowers. Each flower is about one to one and a half centimeters wide.
Flower Colors
Each flower has six special parts called tepals. These tepals can be pinkish, red-purple, or purple with white streaks. They make the scytheleaf onion a pretty sight in its natural habitat.
