Muilla maritima is a type of flowering plant. It is often called the sea muilla or common muilla. This plant naturally grows in California and Baja California. You can find it in many different places. It lives from the coast all the way to the Mojave Desert and the Sierra Nevada foothills. It also grows in other mountains further inland.

You might see Muilla maritima in grasslands, woodlands, deserts, and forests. It is a perennial plant, which means it lives for more than two years. It grows from a special underground stem called a corm. This corm helps the plant store food and water.

What Does It Look Like?

Muilla maritima grows an upright stem that can be up to half a meter tall. That's about 20 inches, or the length of a ruler and a half. The leaves look a bit like onion leaves. They grow from the base of the stem and can be very long, up to 60 centimeters (about 2 feet).

Its Flowers

The top of the stem has many flowers arranged in a shape called an umbel. This looks like an umbrella or a small cluster of flowers. Each flower hangs on a small stalk called a pedicel. These stalks can be up to 5 centimeters (about 2 inches) long.

Each flower has six parts that look like petals, called tepals. They are usually white with a hint of green. They also have brownish lines down the middle. These tepals are quite small, less than 6 millimeters (about a quarter of an inch) long. In the center of each flower, there are six upright stamens. Stamens are the parts of the flower that make pollen. The tips of the stamens, called anthers, can be blue, green, or purple.
